Lines, Texture, and Sound Waves

In terms of physics, music and sketching are very similar because they both deal in waves. One craft is sensed with the ears and the other with the eyes. But more fundamentally, both deal in waves.

With music the waves emanate from vibrating objects, while with picture sketches photons emanate from the page with a source of light and translate in our brains as vision. The colors vibrate at their different hues to contact the eye and reach the brain just as the line of shape produces the suggestion of an image.

Similarly, music vibrates the eardrum which moves a series of small bones that send an electrical signal to the brain. Ultimately, with any art the entire goal is to reach the brain of the person and to elicit a judgment or decision about what they perceive in a work of art.

Lines
Lines play a role in both music and sketching. In the sketch, line is what forms the shape of objects as well as provides many of their details. An incomplete line too, suggesting the shape of an object’s form, provides our vision with enough of an outline to force the brain to see the object clearly through the imagination.

In music, the line will take form as the shape of the melody, lyric, or meter (rhythm), their combination, and overall effect. Sound expressed in multi-layered forms and stretched across time is how musical lines are structured.

The concept of the line in art and creativity denotes the direction of artistic ideas stretched across time or expressed in an object.

Texture
When the line of an artistic thought achieves a certain density, it begins to manifest texture.

When the image or details from a painting or sketch seems to jump out from the canvas or page and displays three-dimensionality, this is texture manifested. And when the sounds in a piece of music seem to fill a space where you perceive each sonic object as originating from different directions, this too is texture manifested.

Texture in sketch and music can be manifested in thickness, distances, angles, smoothness, shape, brightness, depth, and their opposites. Playing with the opposing characteristics of each of these factors is what gives texture its unique quality.
In its most extreme manifestation, texture imbues the art experience with the feeling that the artwork is reaching out towards the audience in an attempt to make physical contact. Done effectively, texture can surround or overwhelm the individual’s senses in a flood of perceptions that grips their imagination.

In both of these arts, the lines of artistic expression, their combined effect, and all the details that each mark, brushstroke, or recorded vibration, displays in relation to every other line is what transmits artistic impressions from the artist to the audience.

The value of these impressions is in their ability to communicate sensations of urgencies, significances, and importance to the person perceiving the piece of music or sketch.

California Gas Pump Tax: “Anger” by Stereo Thesis

____________________________________________________________

In a state like California, where we’re constantly teeter on the verge of bankruptcy, it’s a shame that so much money gets collected from taxes at the gas pump, but somehow we have a reputation for some of the world’s worst roads and highways. Here’s what the state of California and the federal government takes in from each gallon of gas and what the price of a gallon of gas costs as of February 5, 2015.

Knowing what I know from my experience of driving on the roads in southern California, this tax money should be used to improve road development, expand highways, and change traffic systems to make road travel faster and more efficient. But instead we can be sure that both levels of government are wasting this money for other projects and lining the pockets of their largest political donors.

Living in California is already expensive with its high cost of living, high sales and property taxes, and the highest prices for gas, so isn’t it fun to imagine a cancelation of state and federal taxes on gasoline and a $0.50 reduction in the price of gas. This would make the price of gas $2/gallon the norm. Can you think of how you would use those savings at the pump by reducing or eliminating the gas tax?

Seeing how much money was siphoned off each gallon of gas got me angry and compelled me to write these thoughts down. Anger is a powerful emotion when it’s combined with intelligence and planning because it can inspire others to act and provide direction for a cause.

In terms of music, here’s a track called “Anger” from the album Mixacord by Stereo Thesis that best illustrates how the emotion of anger can be communicated in sound. It’s a short piece, but very effective.

Intention, Meaning, and The Power of the Human Voice

____________________________________________________________

Beyond the words is the meaning that the words are carrying.
Beyond the meanings of words are the emotions that the meanings and meaninglessness of words cannot always express.
The power of the human voice lies in the utterance of an intention which comes from the heart and mind. The power of the human voice is not derived from any part of the anatomy.
Pain and joy, failure and triumph, apathy and enthusiasm, love and dejection are the emotions one communicates in a sigh, groan or victory speech.
The desire to communicate and the message one intends to send must unite into a single force transfixed in a moment of time and travel an invisible line into the soul of another.
Words are interchangeable and essentially meaningless. Without a clear intention words have no power to reach another human being.
In these words and the meanings that they contain lie the mysteries of communication. Make your intention absolute and the utility of the human voice will provide you with the power to inspire, persuade, and lead.

How Royalties Can Help Artists Achieve Financial Freedom

____________________________________________________________
To get your FREE full-length album…click here. ____________________________________________________________

Financial Freedom and Wealth Defined

In the Rich Dad books, you'll find the simplest and most understandable definitions of financial freedom and wealth.

When the income from your assets equals or exceeds your living expenses, you're financially free. In other words, when you receive a steady stream of income that is not dependent on you working for it, then you are free from the necessity of labor. This is financial freedom and you can achieve it in part or completely with royalty income.

Now the measure of your financial freedom is also the extent of your wealth. The measure of wealth can range from a few days time to infinity. In other words, wealth is measured in time. So the question is, "How many days can you survive without working?" If you're living paycheck to paycheck, then your wealth might only last a week to one month. If you have savings, actively flip homes, or trade stocks, then your wealth might last much longer. But if you work to generate cash flow or passive income for life, then your wealth is actually infinite. The beauty of the royalty is that not only can it make you financially free, but it can also make you truly wealthy.

Achieving Financial Freedom through Art Income

The secret to achieving financial freedom is really just a series of simple formulas. The formulas are easy to understand, but they all require discipline to follow. The success of each formula lies in the consistency to follow it. The consistency is the key.

Here are just a few formulas with which to get started.

1. Convert your time, energy, and talent into producing and promoting quality desirable creative products. Market them to the correct public and flow the income you receive into acquiring assets.

2. Convert your time, energy, and talent into producing and promoting quality desirable creative products. Discover ways of merchandising your artwork using a scalable approach to reach an ever greater audience or consumer base. Instead of playing or performing live consider investing in the production of a DVD of a live performance and letting each DVD earn money for you. The speed of distribution for 10,000 or 100,000 DVD's can far exceed, the speed of travel while touring. Touring can accelerate the rate of sales, but 100,000 DVD can have a far greater reach than touring can. Moreover, the profit potential on 10,000 or 100,000 DVD's will be much higher than each show without merchandise, so use merchandise.

Illustrators can try T-shirts or animated movies. Musicians and composers can work on getting their music into films and T.V. shows. Chefs can develop all kinds of dishes and sell books of recipes or start a network or on-line cooking show. Writers can think about audiobooks. Photographers and painters can think calendars or aligning themselves with home decorating magazines and T.V. shows. The list is endless and is limited only by imagination.

3. Convert your time, energy, and talent into producing and promoting quality desirable creative products. Leverage the success of all your previous promotional and marketing efforts in the negotiation of your royalty contract. After you've proven the profitability with the accounting from your creative business or company, you can negotiate the terms and percentages. Sign the contract and use your royalty income to pay for your expenses and for the additional purchasing of income producing assets.

Royalties
So what is a royalty? Basically, it is a contract between the distributor and the holder of a valued product (intellectual property) that agrees to pay the provider a percentage of profits for the life of the contract.

Royalties are the primary way a musician can generate passive income. Passive income is cash flow and cash flow is money that comes to you on a regular basis without you having to work for it. The contract guarantees the income and the value of the intellectual property is what produces the royalty. The royalty is a derivative of the intellectual property.

For artists, the way to begin producing royalty or passive income from their artwork is to start with the artwork itself. If your goal is to live off of the earnings from your artwork, you must first produce work that is desirable and profitable (in demand and selling). The more in demand it is the easier it will be to offer investors, publishers, and distributors as an intellectual property. They must see the profit potential in it for themselves before they will even consider purchasing rights for a piece (percentage) of the action.

So step 1 is focus on the quality of the artwork itself.

Step 2 is focus on the marketing and promotion.
After you have a quality product which has that special something to it that's getting a positive response from the public, receiving the most attention, and producing the most income for you, then your efforts must turn to deepening that interest by focusing on marketing and promotion.

Your promotional efforts must test and locate the best channels for getting the word out about your creative products, while your marketing plan must specify how you will deliver those products to your public and get paid when those sales are made. Some artists will make the bulk of their money from touring, selling art or music on-line, by publishing e-books on Kindle, performing as opening acts, or by becoming well-known in a region or territory. Continue to feed the channels of your success with further investment of time, energy, and creative products.

The next stage of your development will come from finding new opportunities to scale up in your promotion and marketing. The highest success achievement for a creative person might be artistic saturation, which would be where their work seems to permeate the social fabric in our time and for future generations. Artistic saturation could also be seen as the point where the artist as an individual or their artwork is inseparable from the idea of human culture.

As your sales continue to grow, you must seriously consider transforming your love for art into a business by setting up a legal entity or company. Aside from your copyrights, your choice of business entity such as the S- or C-corporation, limited liability corporation (LLC), and limited partnership (LP) will also help to protect your assets (intellectual properties) from legal predators, family members, and other artists. These protections will also help you shield the income you produce from these individuals.

Consult with an intellectual property attorney for additional information, education, and to structure a company around your artwork. This is the best way to protect your song, painting, recipes, poetry, and designs from copyright infringement and counterfeiting.

So again, the royalty produces cash flow in the form of passive income (or money you don't have to work for) that comes to you on a regular basis. An asset is something that increases in value over time and the royalty is an income producing asset. To learn more about assets and cash flow read Rich Dad, Poor Dad and The Cash Flow Quadrant by Robert Kiyosaki.

Here are several other creative approaches to generate artistic sources of royalty income: music compositions, jingles, publishing rights, inventions, methods, systems, or processes (such as video editing software or music recording hardware), and real estate that may hold valuable artistic significance such as historic hotels, homes, tours, and museums (think The Wax Museum in Hollywood and the Presley's Graceland). Wardrobe, jewelry, illustrations, old guitars, memorabilia from film, music history, the entertainment industry, or the personal lives of celebrities can also be excellent sources of income to add to your artist asset column.

Catharsis and the Creative Process

____________________________________________________________

Creativity is the most intense path to catharsis. The mind must connect to the emotions and form an idea into a physical shape such as a book or painting. The mind and the emotions must unite into a single line of intention that fills the work of art completely. Similarly, the artist's body and his equipment must become one in a singular creative purpose.

Whether it's a new recipe, clothing design, or symphony, the creation must receive and retain the full intention of your concentrated effort. The result of any act of creation should always be the physical form of an aesthetic desire, which is the drive to see something become real that only exists in your imagination.

Every creative idea an artist can conceive of has an energetic center of gravity that pulls similar energies like it towards itself. So as we fill an aesthetic product with our desire to make it real, it forms a vacuum within us that is steadily filled with more ideas similar to the original. The human experience of this creative vacuum is felt as a surge of inspiration or illumination in spiritual circles. Others report it as a spiritual awakening, the seeing of transcendental visions, or catharsis.

As the inspiration fills us, it disturbs our balance of mind by generating wild undercurrents in our consciousness that eventually must find resolution in our work. This experience has many names because no one really knows it's true source, so each person attributes it to the source they most deeply value. But whatever the source, supernatural, extraterrestrial, or earthly, the human mind is the vehicle or conduit for the creativity that is flowing through them. To channel the complete creative desire into art is the nature of our work as artists.

To tap into this stream of creativity, the artist must treat his work as if it were a ritual or ceremony that deserves his utmost respect. He must enter a state of relaxed concentration and allow the ideas to pour through him and connect to his emotions in order to translate them into artistic products. Sometimes the creative stream is light, heavy, or overwhelming depending on many factors such as the time of day, our mood, the seasons, and our level of skill, but neither resistance nor total acceptance will prevent the eventual burst of catharsis, which restores balance to the mind.

The more expertly and efficient the artist can work, the quicker they can complete each product and prepare it for distribution. In the end, the ultimate goal for most artistic endeavors is to form our creativity into a physical shape. All of the objects that fill our world have been brought to us through the creative process and the work of human beings to make it solid and real.

For musicians, the goal is to shape an idea, message, or emotional experience with sound and solidify it in a recording. For an author, the goal might be to formulate a plot line complex enough to keep the readers guessing, while permitting various clues to surface throughout the story that make the readers believe they know who did it or what's going to happen next. For the entrepreneur, the goal will be to manufacture the good or develop the service to reach a targeted set of customers or clients. And for a singer, the goal could be to present lyrics with the correct balance between technical delivery, emotional display, and theatrics.

As the facet of our creative energies must be opened and closed for each work of our imagination, you must complete the creative process with the belief that the work you have done has assumed the physical shape of the idea you had been operating towards, and that there's nothing more inside of you to put into it. With balance of mind restored, the cathartic release subsides, and allows you to review the work you have just completed. The law of catharsis requires that you consider it done and never return to it again.
